Ocoee Rangers News Letter Vol. 13 Issue No. 4 April 2015
Posted by Deadman in NewsletterEarly Rain Chases Away Soft-Core Shooters!
It rained Friday night and Saturday morning, sometimes quite vigorously (How about that word, Owlhoot?). But shortly after Too Tall started the Buffalo Shoot, the rain stopped. And it didn’t rain again. Here’s how Ocoee Red described it. ” Well you wusses and fair weather shooters missed a perfect cowboy day. Shady, slight wind, perfect temperature, etc, what else could you ask for? The rain stopped soon after I got here this morning and notta drop during the shoot.”
37 intrepid shooters participated in the match. Mrs. Pleasant was dressed really spiffy in a red hat, red blouse, red boots, red finger nails, and sporting red shotgun shells. She made Too Tall look plain and ordinary: of course Ocoee Red would likely say, “What’s different about that?”
Purly was the TOP GUN, and Last Kiss was the Top Lady Shooter. The Top 10 Shooters were (1) Purly (2) Hurricane Charly (3) Barkeep Casey (4) Widowmaker (5) Unpleasant (6) Happy Pappy (7) T-Bone Angus (8) Ocoee Red (9) Pleasant and (10) Polecat Carl. In the Buffalo Shoot, Jackson Longstreet won the competition in Long Range Rifle – Rifle Cal., and Pleasant won the Long Range Rifle – Pistol Cal. shooting. Only these 2 categories were shot, because of weather.
12 shooters shot the match with no misses.

OCOEE RANGERS
Leadmine Valley Shoot-Out!
September 26, 2015
Don’t Miss It!
In September 2014, the Ocoee Rangers held their 1st Annual Leadmine Valley Shoot-Out!, and it was a dilly. 102 shooters participated in that Shoot. Well, pardner, we’re gonna do it again. Last time out, Ocoee Red appointed Purly as the Match Coordinator. Purly gathered a team of able helpers, and the Match was a big success. Just ask Too Tall.
In the movies, when a flick is a big success, they make a sequel. So, Ocoee Red and Purly decided that if it makes sense in the dark in movie houses, it probably makes sense out in the bright sunlight. So, On September 26, 2015 the 2nd installment of the Leadmine Valley Shoot-Out! will open at the Ocoee Rangers Shooting Range at the Cleveland Hunting Rifle and Pistol Club, located at 2522 Leadmine Valley Road, Cleveland, TN 37311. Purly will, once again, be the Match Coordinator. The details still have to be worked out, but go ahead and mark your calendar, so you’ll remember to attend. More information will be forthcoming in the Ocoee Rangers Newsletter (paper and website versions) and on the Ocoee Rangers Forum. You can contact Purly and Ocoee Red by email for more info at their email addresses: … Purly … purly45@gmail.com … and Ocoee Red … ocoeered@hotmail.com
Here’s a review of the Leadmine Valley Shoot-Out from last year.
If you shot with us at the Leadmine Valley Shoot-Out! last year, mark your calendar, so you won’t miss the remake this year. If you missed the original in 2014, then Don’t Miss The Sequel this year ………. SEPTEMBER 26, 2015.
The Ocoee Rangers Then and Now
“… Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear.” …. That used to be part of the opening of the LONE RANGER on radio and on TV. In the last newsletter, we took a gander at how Cowboy Action Shooting came to be in Southeast Tennessee and how the Ocoee Rangers were born. Let’s continue along that nostalgic trail a little longer and talk about the first 2 Ocoee Rangers shoots and compare them to current times.
Our 1st Ocoee Rangers shoot was held on March 15, 2003. 51 shooters participated, only 16 of whom still shoot with us regularly or sorta frequently: Ocoee Red, Pleasant, Horseshoe John, Unpleasant, Double Eagle, Owlhoot Hardin, T-Bone Angus, Linc, Marshal Too Tall, Tarheel, Lightning McCoy, Tombstone, Limp Along Charlie, Rev. Adam Jones, Sundance McNeyman and Deadman. Of Course Mesquite Millie was there, but she didn’t shoot.
At that 1st match, we recognized 9 shooting categories. Pleasant, shooting Gunfighter, was the Top Gun. His average time per stage was 34.47 seconds. Unpleasant’s average time per stage was 36.77 seconds. Of the Top 10, who are still with us, they were: (1) Pleasant (4) Ocoee Red (6) Unpleasant (7) Double Eagle (8) Horseshoe John. Only 1 shooter shot with no misses: Deadman. No miss matches were rare. Back then, targets were the cowboy targets we sometimes shoot, and they were about 12 yards away, so we publicized no-miss stages that were shot. At that 1st shoot, 7 shooters shot 4 clean stages, and 5 of them are still with us: Pleasant, Tarheel, Owlhoot Hardin, Lightning McCoy and Horseshoe John. T-Bone Angus wrote the scenarios. Flossie was the only Lady Shooter at that 1st match. The average shooting time per stage for all shooters was 58.73 seconds.

Horseshoe John’s Posse, April 2003. This Photo was on Page 1. Everyone With a Red X No Longer Shoots With Us. Only Horseshoe John and the Photographer, Deadman, are Still Amongst Us
At the 2nd shoot, April 2003, Marshal Too Tall conducted the 1st Ocoee Rangers Buffalo Shoot. There were 2 categories: Open Sight and Peep Sight. He won both categories. No Lady Shooter participated, and only 2 shooters shot with no misses, neither of whom are still with us. At that match, we had 11 shooting categories, and, again, T-Bone wrote the scenarios.
The average 2003 attendance was 56, with a low of 38 (bad weather) and high of 63. In 2014, average attendance was 69, with a low of 26 (bad weather) and high of 102.
Flip time forward to March 2015. We had 62 shooters and 28 shooting categories. Wow! Hurricane Charly was the Top Gun, and averaged shooting each stage in 19.62 seconds. 17 shooters shot with no misses, of course our targets are lots bigger and lots closer now. The average time per stage for all shooters was 45.48 seconds, 13.25 less than in March 2003. Too Tall’s Buffalo Shoot had also changed. Categories shot were Long Range Rifle – Rifle Cal. … Long Range Rifle – Pistol Cal. … Long Range Pistol … and .22 cal. In March 2003, he’d won both categories of the Buffalo Shoot. At the March 2015 Buffalo Shoot, he won only the Long Range Pistol event. Jackson Longstreet won the other 3 contests.
Lots of time has passed, and folks have come and gone, and others have arrived, ….. and we’re still going strong.
