Yep, at the April shoot, the weather was a bit messy, and the bullets really did race through the raindrops. Or at least some of them did. With some of those butterfly loads though, it might have been more a matter of moseying amongst them. 1 shooter described it this way, “It was a wet, nasty day.” But 56 brave cowboys & cowgirls ventured out to fling lead down range, and in the process, 14 of them shot “No Misses Matches”. A mind reader was standing near Double Eagle and heard him thinking this: “If that 1 raindrop hadn’t hit that 1 bullet, I’d have shot a clean match like Roma Jane did. It just ain’t fair. She shot better than me, and my pony tail is longer than hers.”
The day started differently for Marshal Too Tall, who’s lately been advertising himself as the “tiny tiger”. Sheriff Donald crafted a special plaque, “The Tiger Catcher”, sorta like a big mouse trap, for good old Too Tall, and Ocoee Red presented it to him during the pre-shoot awards ceremony. Take a look at Too Tall with his Tiger Catcher at the right. Notice that both tigers are wearing a black cowboy hat. Receipt of the special recognition must have pleased and excited old Too Tall, because he forgot to provide the scores from the Buffalo Shoot. But what the heck, they’ll be another Buffalo Shoot in May, and it’s not every day that a feller gets a real, honest to gosh tiger catcher.
And then there’s the story of the “Pinch Shooter”. The Rev. Adam Jones’ doctor told him he couldn’t shoot his shotgun. No problem. We’ve handled that situation several times before. We use a “pinch shooter”, just like baseball uses pinch hitters. So, the Rev. asked old Festus D. Deputy to help him out and shoot the shotgun targets for him. And being a good, courteous cowboy compadre, Festus agreed to help. And he hit all of the Rev’s shotgun targets. But in the process, he evidently had a senior moment and shot 1 group out of order, awarding the Rev a glorious procedural. Maybe old Festus just got caught in Too Tall’s tiger catcher. Or maybe not.
The following folks shot matches without missing a single target: Roma Jane, Unpleasant, Clancy O’Conall, Marshal Too Tall, Festus D. Deputy, Pleasant, Lightning McCoy, Yankee Dutchman, Rev. Adam Jones, Deacon Red, Tarheel, Tenn Smoke, Hide Cutter and Tellico.
