Cowboys In Black – The Janitor & The Man With Outreach

The April shoot was great, and so were the weather and the stages, T-Bone Angus creations. The stages, not the weather. 77 shooters participated, with 2 (Clancy O’Conall & Marshal W D) shooting in 2 classes. Someone asked how many Maverick type shooters we had: there were 8.

What are Maverick shooters?  Well, Maverick shooters shoot targets at the distance that SASS recommends and that used to be standard distance for all shooters. Their targets are just a little bit farther away than the other targets.  They are pretty big and pretty close, but not as close as the other targets. And only those who want to shoot Maverick shoot them.  Other folks shoot the closer targets. So, it’s shooter’s choice as to targets engauged. (How ’bout that word Owlhoot?)

Cumberland Drifter was the Top Gun, and Dodge City Dixie was the Top Lady Shooter, also placing 5th overall. The Top Maverick Shooter was Lightning McCoy. The Top 10 Overall Shooters were (1) Cumberland Drifter (2) Hurricane Charly (3) Double Nickle (4) Slater (5) Dodge City Dixie (6) Captain Bill Burt (7) Marshal W D (8) Barkeep Casey (9) Reno Mustang and (10) Ocoee Red. 18 shooters shot with no misses, none of which were Maverick shooters: their targets are harder to hit.  Now to the cowboys in black, the janitor and the man with outreach. First, the man with outreach. That would be the Rev. Adam Jones. How so? Well, he’s a minister, on and off the range. So, if there’s anything up there, he has out-reach. And he has reached out to influence others. Right? And he has, for many years, had the shotgun with the longest barrel on the range. At the April shoot, he was packing a Colt Buntline Special, which was the longest pistol barrel on the range.

Now comes the Janitor: Marshal Too Tall. How so? Well, Spring has sprung, which brings Spring Cleaning, which involves sweeping. Too Tall was in the sweeping business at the shoot. He swept the Buffalo Shoot, winning all 4 categories. Then he swept the main match, shooting with no misses. How ’bout that? …. They may both be men in black, but neither looks anything like Johnny Cash, even if Too Tall does think he can sing.

Out On The Range

We’re lucky to have a really good range, with shelters on each shooting bay, graveled roadway and shooting bays to be good even in wet weather, and lots of trees around the shooting and parking areas. In the spring, like the April shoot, the greenery of the trees adds a lot to our range experience. The green of the trees, the blue of the sky, the dogwood tree on 1 of the shooting bays, and, as they used to say on the radio version of the tale of Matt Dillon and Dodge City, “the smell of gun smoke”. Of course we mostly don’t smell it. We see it sometimes. Here are a few looks from the range at the April shoot.
