In the Old West, folks had to be self reliant, cautions, and always aware of their surroundings. Why? Well some other folks were out to feather their nests at their neighbors’ expense. Sorta like some politicians today. For example, Pat Garrett, the pistol-packer who shot Billy the Kid, later got rooked in a ranching deal. He leased his ranch for grazing and was to have received a percentage of new calves and horses born on the ranch. There was no contract saying what the lessee was going to raise. He showed up with 1,200 goats. No cattle and only the horse he was riding. What does this have to do with our shoot? Treachery. People in the old west had to watch out for it. And a 1st impression would say that Last Kiss should do the same. Look at the photo below. She’s concentrating on her targets down range. But look at Jackalope’s right hand. It appears that he’s preparing to draw his pistol. Who’d have thought he was a back shooter. And what could make him want to shoot Last Kiss? Maybe it’s because her pig tail is much longer than his pony tail. Or maybe not.

Jackalope Times Last Kiss As She Blasts Her Targets, But Why Does It Look Like He's Drawing His Pistol?
Moving right along, we had a good crowd, 73 shooters. Sassy Motchie shot another No Misses Match. And Hurricane Charly edged out Unpleasant to be the TOP GUN. The difference in their total shooting time for the 5 stages was 4.03 seconds. That’s close. In rank score, Hurricane Charly had 6 fewer points. Both shooters did very well. Anita Margarita was the Top Lady Shooter.
The Top 10 Shooters were (1) Hurricane Charly (2) Unpleasant (3) Marshal W.D. (4) Polecat Carl (5) Marshal Too Tall (6) Widowmaker (7) Purly (8) Tabasco JOT (9) Sean Clancy O’Conall and (10) Jackalope. 22 shooters shot No Misses Matches: Sassy Motchie, Hurricane Charly, Polecat Carl, Tabasco JOT, Fast Harley, Ocoee Red, Happy Pappy, Tin Pot, T-Bone Angus, Lightning McCoy, Yankee Dutchman, Long Creek Stranger, TN Mongo, Sudden Sam, TN Hawk, Squire Shooter, Hide Cutter, Deadman, Raw Flint, Sundance McNeyman, Tellico and Wildwood Marshal.
SHERIFF DONALD – REMBERENCE OF A COWBOY & HIS SMILE
On Friday, June 15th, the Ocoee Rangers and the River Bend Rough Riders lost a good cowboy and a good friend. Sheriff Donald finally lost his battle with illness that had challenged him for a long time, and like the competitor that he was, he stuck to his guns and gave the battle his very best.
Sheriff Donald and his best shootin’ buddy, Deadeye Daisy, were Ocoee Rangers even before we became Ocoee Rangers, shooting with us on the Cleveland Range. Donald always had a smile and a cheery word for everyone. The last time he visited with us in January 2012, he couldn’t shoot because he’d lost feeling in his fingers and couldn’t handle his guns, but he still had the smile and the cheery word.
Sheriff Donald and his pistol packing partner Deadeye Daisy were a pair, on and off the range. They were pistol partners and also partners in smiles. Just look at the picture above and try to say it ain’t so: you can’t. The photo was taken March 28, 2004. The smiles are real, not just posed for the photo. And if you look closely at the character on Donald’s string tie, it’s his alter ego, Sheriff Donald Duck. I’ll bet even Too Tall can figure out where Daisy’s shooting alias came from.
Life is spiced by love and a sense of humor. Daisy showed the sense of humor that Sheriff Donald surely enjoyed in their 50 + years of marriage. Daisy closed her announcement of Donald’s passing in the Ocoee Rangers Forum, saying, ” Right now, I’m still full of anger at him for leaving at such a young age. Especially, since I realized this morning that I can’t get into the big gun safe.”
Sheriff Donald was a fine feller, a terrific cowboy, and an all round good man. As long us cowboys and cowgirls still here remember him and his smile, he’ll never be really be gone. Roy Rogers always said, after his partner, Dale Evans wrote it for him to say, “Happy Trails.” ……….
Happy Trails, Sheriff Donald.
