Memorial Day Weekend Shoot!
Counting Clancy O’Conall twice, because he shot as both a Maverick Wrangler and a Wrangler, 66 shooters played the Ocoee Rangers Cowboy Shooting game in May. The day couldn’t have been better, but attendance is always down a little in May as the long weekend draws families to travel. The day started sorta unusual. Hurricane Charly was seen getting his guncart out of his truck, but no other shooting gear was in the truck, just a lot of rocks about half the size of an egg and a brick and a half. A wise acre asked, “Hey, are you just gonna throw rocks at the targets today?” Hurricane Charly, with a good comeback, said, “Yeah. I’ve got a couple of bricks too. Some of those knockdown targets are hard to get down.” Excellent response, Charly.
Double Nickle was the Top Gun, Anita Margarita was the Top Lady Shooter, and Sean Clancy O’Conall was the Overall Top Maverick Shooter. The Top 10 Shooters were (1) Double Nickle (2) Unpleasant (3) Cumberland Drifter (4) Purly (5) Hurricane Charly (6) Clancy O’Conall (7) Slater (8) Ocoee Red (9) Barkeep Casey and (10) Jackalope.
Below, Double Eagle is timing Clancy O’Conall shooting Wrangler, or maybe Sean Clancy O’Conall shooting Maverick Wrangler. Of course Mr. O’Conall shot both categories without a miss. Clancy’s a good example to show the impact of shooting Maverick, at old style SASS distances. Shooting Wrangler, his stage average speed was 24.86 seconds. Shooting Maverick Wrangler, his average stage speed was 37.53 seconds. So, on average, shooting targets a little bit farther away took an average of 12.67 seconds longer. We had 9 Maverick style shooters, which was 14% of total shooters. Give or take a percent, that’s about usual.
Cookie Lynn, traveling with Blue Ridge Mike, shot her 1st Ocoee Rangers match, shooting Lady 49er. She’s a good person to have in your posse. She’s fun to shoot with, she works, and she shares very good cookies that she bakes. If you ever have to choose to shoot with Cookie Lynn or Too Tall, choose her. Right, Sundance?
In the Buffalo Shoot, Jackson Longstreet won the .22 competition. Unpleasant won the Long Range Rifle – Pistol Caliber event, and Marshal Too Tall won the Long Range Rifle – Rifle Cal. and Long Range Pistol shoots.

…… OCOEE RED ….
Practical Cowboy & Captain Of the Ocoee Rangers
What do you know about Ocoee Red? That he led the formation of the Ocoee Rangers? Yep. That he’s the Captain of the Ocoee Rangers and has been since our origin? Yep. That he’s been the Cleveland Hunting Rifle and Pistol Club Chairman of the Cowboy Shooting group since our origin? Yep. That he’s been a cowboy shooter at the Cleveland range since before we were the Ocoee Rangers? Yep. About now, Too Tall’s saying, “Hey. I know all this stuff. Where’s this going?” So, as Jackie Gleason used to say a long time ago on THE HONEYMOONERS show, ” Away we go.”
Ocoee Red has evolved into the cowboy shooter that he is now. Believe it or not, he started out shooting .45 cal. pistols. And he was a bit more fashion conscious. He was the 1st cowboy I ever saw wearing Cathedral stitched cowboy boots, and they looked good. And he favored big hats and red shirts. But, shucks, he was and is Ocoee RED. But no matter how he dressed, or shot, and he’s always shot well, and he’s always been friendly, considerate, and a gentleman on the range. Maybe that’s his nature, or maybe he realizes that everyone is armed. Who knows?
What does all this have to do practicality? Well, the 1st indication is changing from .45’s to .38’s. Ocoee Red wanted to win, and the winners shot .38’s. And reloading .38’s was less costly than reloading .45’s. So, he made a practical change. But that’s not the only example of him being practical.
The other night, when perusing the Ocoee Rangers Forum, there was a discussion involving several cowboys. Too Tall kicked it off saying something like, “Hey. My rifle hiccupped chambering a round. You know, the magazine spring gets rusty in the magazine tube, and the tube gets rusty too. I’m thinking about putting a sleeve in my rifle to stop this hiccupping problem, but sleeves cost lots of peanuts. Anybody have any experience with sleeves?”
Being a bit light hearted, here’s some version of what he heard. Cowboy X said, “Hey. I got 1 in my rifle. It’s made of fiber, and I coat it with 100% genuine organic possum renderings. It doesn’t hiccup anymore.” Then Cowboy Y said, “Well, I have a solid silver sleeve in my rifle, dusted with peacock feathers. It doesn’t hiccup any more either.” Cowboy Z said, “I like’em both, and have used both. I install them at the dark of the moon, and my rifle doesn’t hiccup any more either.” Then, Ocoee Red responded. Let’s digress here. (How ’bout that word, Owlhoot?)
Once, I saw a Peanuts strip. Charlie Brown and Linus were laying on a hill looking up at the clouds. Linus said something like, “Look at those clouds, Charlie Brown. That one looks like a 3-masted sailing ship running with the wind. That one looks like the Roman Coliseum. What do you see, Charlie Brown?” Charlie Brown, being practical, said, “I was going to say a horsey and a ducky.”
Now, imagine that’s Too Tall and Ocoee Red laying on that hill. Too Tall’s been talking about all the advice he’d been given about sleeves made of different stuff and applications of possum renderings and peacock feathers to stop his rifle from hiccupping because of a rusty magazine spring and tube. Ocoee Red said, on the Forum and laying in the grass, (I’m sure with a smile), “Well, I clean my gun, and that stops it from happening.”
So, you’d have to say that Ocoee Red is practical in his solution. And in addition to that, he has a clean gun. That makes him tidy and practical. Maybe horseys and duckys aren’t bad. Ocoee Red ain’t bad either.
