Half-Cocked Kaylee & Lucky Lightburne Demonstrate Shooting Skills At October Shooters’ Choice Match!

The Ocoee Rangers October Shoot was a bit different. Shooters could choose to shoot pistols at knock down targets and Texas star paddles, and targets at different ranges or big close tombstones at 9 feet. There was something to please most folks, no matter how they like to shoot. Evolution has tended to squeeze out some of us who’ve shot for many years in favor of the 14 to 20-seconds-stages achievable only with big targets really close. It was fun to have a match at which everyone could be happy. And shooters’ choice stages moved as quickly as any other match. … 63 shooters participated.

Like the others, Stage 2 had 2 options, but shooters could choose to shoot the paddles off the Texas Star with pistols. If all 5 paddles were knocked off with 5 shots, the shooter received a 5 second bonus, and if he/she didn’t miss any of the 5 shots at the dump target, he/she received another 5 second bonus. Then, if the shooter shot the cowboy rifle target the 1st 5 shots and didn’t miss any of the other 5 rifle shots, he/she received another 5 second bonus: 15 potential bonus seconds removed from shooting time for the stage. The 1st shooter to receive the 15 second bonus for stage 2 was Two Step Net. Then her shooting pardner, Purly, shot, and he too received the bonus points. That’s where my favorite little cowgirl comes in: Half-Cocked Kaylee. Shooting Lady Buckaroo, she also chose to shoot the Texas Star with her pistols, and she received her 15 bonus points for the stage. She also looked real nifty in her new chaps.

By now, Too Tall’s wondering, “What about Lucky Lightbulb, I mean Lucky Lightburne?” … Well, Lucky Lightburne shot option 2 on all stages, although officially shooting as a Duelist. And on Stage 1, the 1 with the targets way down range, he shot the targets from the starting line, Duelist style, and hit them all. Of the 13 shooters who shot the match with no misses, Lucky Lightburne is the only one who shot option 2 on all stages and shot all targets from the maximum distance. How ’bout that?

Now Ocoee Red would say, “Hey, them boys shooting targets out there or the knock downs can’t shoot as fast as us folks who shoot’em big and close.” That’s true. But, in Springfield, MO, in1865, Will Bill Hickok and Dave Tutt had a disagreement over a watch, and Hickok told Tutt not to cross a certain point in town wearing the watch. Tutt wouldn’t be intimidated, and he proceeded to cross the line. At a distance of about 70 yards, both drew their pistols and fired 1 shot at the other. Like Lucky Lightburne, Hickok hit his target, and a bit later, Tutt’s ghost when searching for heaven.

3 shooters wanted to protect their places in Annual Competition, so they paid 2 shoot fees and shot in their regular class and shot as Down Rangers: Hurricane Charly, Marshal W.D. and Clancy O’Conall. Hurricane Charly was the 1st Place Cowboy, and Marshal W.D. was 2nd. Marshal W.D. was the 1st Place Down Ranger, and Hurricane Charly was 2nd. Hurricane Charly was also the No. 2 Overall Shooter.

Unpleasant, shooting Gunfighter, was the 1st place Gunfighter and the TOP GUN of the day. Dodge City Dixie was the 1st place Lady Senior shooter, the Top Lady Shooter, and placed 8th in the Top 10 Shooters

Who were the Top 10 Shooters at the October Match? Here they are: (1) Unpleasant (2) Hurricane Charly (as a Cowboy) (3) Slater (4) Barkeep Casey (5) Widowmaker (6) Ocoee Red (7) Cumberland Drifter (8) Dodge City Dixie (9) Jackalope and (10) Happy Pappy.

By now, Too Tall’s saying, “Don’t forget the Buffalo Shooters.” So, here are the results. Jackson Longstreet won the .22 caliber competition, and Marshal Too Tall won all the other categories: Long Range (50 yard) Pistol, Long Range (100 yards) Pistol Caliber Rifle, and Long Range (100 yards) Rifle Caliber Rifle. … Too Tall did very well.

October is Halloween month, and several folks dressed in seasonal attire. (How ’bout that word, Owlhoot?) Mrs. Pleasant wore a nifty new hat that she got at Salem, MS, home of the original witch trials. Hers was complete with a spider. Clancy O’Conall had a new look with a black hat of his own. Nope, he doesn’t really have a pointed head. He was wearing a bandana under his hat, and he just looed like his head is pointed. … Jackalope wore his Halloween shirt and bandana, and Keystone dressed in Halloween black. He also packed his 7 1/2 inch colts: he shot as a down ranger, but gunfighter style. El Camino, shooting his 2nd match with us, was also decked out in black with yellow suspenders so bright that they made Too Tall’s eyes water.

Did we learn anything from a Shooters’ Choice Match? Yep. Here are lessons learned: (1) It’s not necessary for folks to shoot as Down Rangers to shoot the pistol options for knock-down targets or Texas Star paddles or targets out a little farther. (2) Designed to keep things moving, the stages with choices move as quickly as any other match. So, why not have options, at least some of the time. (3) It might be fun for shooters to have a Shooters’ Choice Match which would not count for Annual Awards Competition, so folks could shoot for fun and not jeopardize their Annual Award standings. (3) From watching shooters’ reactions, the targets on stage 1, if shot at max distance with either rifle or pistol, were too far away. (4) Several folks who’ve shot for years commented that it was fun to shoot targets with more variety.

Who won the categories in shooting? Well, take a look.

 Question From Ocoee Red

Hey! I need your input about how we award 2015 Annual Shooting Awards. Our December shoot will be on the 4th Saturday, Dec. 26. That’s the day after Christmas. From past comments from shooters, we’re going to shoot 5 stages. So, that raises the question about how we award Annual Shooting Awards. Here are the options, as I see them, however, you may have another idea. The options: (1) Stick around after the Dec shoot and present Annual awards at the range clubhouse … or (2) have a lunch after the Dec Shoot at the clubhouse and then present Awards … or (3) present the Annual Awards after the January 2016 shoot either with a meal or without a meal. No matter what we do, the Dec. shoot won’t count toward Annual Competition: it’ll be a fun shoot as usual. ………… So, tell me what you want to do about presenting 2015 Annual Awards. You can either put your comments on our website campsite forum or send me an email or call me. Here are my contact number and email address:
