November Shoots Have Been Around Since Pilgrims Shot Turkeys!
November is for Thanksgiving, and family gatherings, and, of course, the Ocoee Rangers November Turkey Day shoot. 64 cowboys and cowgirls shot the match. We started with a few more, but after about 2 stages, 4 shooters sorta evaporated. At least that’s Too Tall’s guess. If you missed the shoot, you missed a good one, and you missed a chance to see Loose Cinch shoot at rifle targets with his gleaming Henry rifle. He shot pretty good, too, but he usually does
Tin Pot had a really special day. He not only shot a match without any misses, he finished a complete shooting year, January through November, without a single miss.

When all the smoke cleared, Double Nickel was the TOP GUN, followed very closely by Captain Bill Burt and Marshal W.D. The Top Lady Shooter was Anita Margarita.
Here’s how the Top 10 shooters placed: (1) Double Nickel (2) Captain Bill Burt (3) Marshal W.D. (4) Unpleasant (5) Hurricane Charly (6) Black Jack Lee (7) Pleasant (8) Purly (9) Clancy O’Conall and (10) Barkeep Casey. Maybe Unpleasant’s Last Regular Shoot
This may well be the last shoot that Unpleasant can attend, on a regular basis. He’s spread his wings and accepted a job in a foreign country: California. Well, California it is sorta like a foreign country. Unpleasant agrees. He’s been a regular shooter for years, and we’ll miss him.
December Ocoee Rangers Shoot To Be Held On January 2,2016
Oops. We didn’t realize until the Range Gang was setting up for the November shoot that if we shoot on December 26, the range gang will have to set up the range on Christmas Day. And most of them will be with their families celebrating, and some will even be traveling. ………. So, we ain’t going to shoot in December … We’ll shoot the December Shoot, 5 full stages, on January 2, 2016. … And we’ll have our January shoot on the 4th Saturday, Jan. 23, just like we usually do.
Message from Ocoee Red … 2015 Annual Awards – How They’ll Be Presented
Lots of folks raised the question, “How are we going to present 2015 Annual Awards, if we’re not going to shoot in December?” Here’s the answer: We’re going to present them after the January 23, 2016 Shoot. After we finish shooting and the targets are put back in the storage building, we’ll gather at the clubhouse on the range, have cookies or cake and coffee or punch or something to drink (not that kind of drink, T-Bone), and then we’ll present the 2015 Spirit of the Game Award, Top Gun, Top Lady Shooter, and the other awards. After the refreshments are gone, Millie and Deadman will have all the stuff organized, so presenting awards will go pretty fast. We thought about doing this a few other ways, but this seemed the best way to do it.
Double Eagle was in charge of determining the person to receive the Annual Spirit of the Game Award, our most notable award. And he came through like a champ, like he usually does.
Whether you think you’ll win an Annual Award or not, please join us at the range clubhouse after the January 23, 2016 Shoot for refreshments and recognition of the achievements of your fellow shooters and the presentation of their 2015 Annual Awards.
Shooting Experiment Begins in January 23, 2016
Beginning in January, we’ll try an experiment for several months. Here’s why. Some folks don’t enjoy shooting the real big and real close targets. Shooting at 9 or 10 feet doesn’t trip their trigger. So, we’re going to try an experiment that will accommodate the big and close shooters, and those that would like the targets just a little farther away. Here’s how it will work.
How the experiment will work.
(1) We’ll continue to set up stages with tombstone pistol targets at 9 or 10 feet, or there abouts, from the shooting line for people who want to shoot them that way. Rifle and shotgun targets will be set with no different special provision. This group won’t experience any change to their shooting.
(2) We’ll have 3 new categories: Maverick, Maverick gunfighter, and Maverick Duelist. There will be no age groups in these categories.
Maverick Pistol Targets
If regular pistol targets are closer than 10 yards (30 feet), 2 or 3 cowboy silhouette targets will be set up at the 10 yard line (30 feet from the shooting line) for Maverick shooters. …. If there are 2 or 3 regular pistol targets, and 2 or 3 cowboy targets, Maverick shooters will shoot the cowboys in the same order as other shooters. If there are more than 3 regular targets, Maverick shooters will shoot the cowboys any way they want to. However, if the Texas Star or knock-down targets or some special target is used for regular shooters, then Maverick shooters will shoot those targets.
Maverick Rifle Targets
If regular rifle targets are closer than 18 yards (54 feet), 2 or 3 cowboy silhouette targets will be set up at either 18 or 20 yards (54 or 60 feet) from the shooting line for Maverick shooters. If 2 or 3 targets are set up for regular shooters, and 2 or 3 cowboys for Maverick shooters, Mavericks will shoot the cowboy rifle targets in the same manner as other shooters. If there are more than 3 targets for other shooters, Maverick shooters will shoot the cowboy rifle targets any way they want.
If the flying witch or the Texas Star or knockdowns or a special target is used for regular shooters, Maverick shooters will shoot those targets with their rifle, and no special targets will be set up for them. If regular rifle targets, except for the flying witch or special targets, are 18 yards from the shooting line, no additional targets will be set up for Maverick shooters.
Shotgun targets
Everybody will shoot the same shotgun targets.
Experimental Time Period … The Maverick shooting experiment will continue from January through July. If Maverick shooters participate in sufficient number (more than just 2 or 3), then we’ll continue doing it, except we won’t do it during the Annual September Leadmine Valley Shoot-Out!
Closing comments
Maverick Shooters won’t defeat speed shooters shooting big and close targets and aren’t intended to do so. Speed shooters and other shooters who like really huge targets very close have nothing to lose. If you like those targets, they’ll still be available for you to shoot. ……. But if the experiment works, some folks who’ve been shooting Cowboy for many years who don’t like to shoot targets so big and so close will be able to have fun too. We have the targets, and this won’t cost anything to do. Everyone can have fun shooting the targets that they want to shoot.
