Six-Guns, Gunsmoke & Perspiration
- Splinter the Range Horse & Friends. L-R: Purly, Ranger Roger (Background), Cotton Ginnie & Double Eagle
Wow! Splinter the Range Horse trotted out and participated in the July Shoot. He, or she – we’ve never checked, stood front and center in 1 stage. Shooters began as real cowboys and cowgirls would, standing at their horse with hands on their saddle. Then, they moved to shoot. Look at the photo and see a covey of cowfolks with Splinter. All have smiles, including Ranger Roger whose smile is sorta hidden under his mustache.
It was a mite warm, and attendance was a bit down: we had 61 & 1/2 shooters. How did we have half a shooter? Well, an observer, at Ocoee Red’s encouragement, shot a couple of stages.
The Top 10 Shooters were (1) Hurricane Charly (2) Cumberland Drifter (3) Double Nickle (4) Slater (5) Reno Mustang (6) Papa Dave (7) Black Jack Lee (8) Ocoee Red (9) Pleasant (10) Purly. The Top Gun was Hurricane Charly. The Top Lady Shooter was Dodge City Dixie. The Top Overall Maverick Shooter was Dustin Clays. And in the Buffalo Shoot, Marshal Too Tall won the whole enchilada (all categories).
Jack Rabbit Bob …………… Gone But Not Forgotten
Jack Rabbit Bob (Bob Huddleston) has passed from our world. He was an old friend from our days of shooting as Tennessee Mountain Marauders at the Cleveland range and as an Ocoee Ranger. Jack Rabbit Bob shot at our 1st official shoot as Ocoee Rangers. At that shoot, he placed 5th overall, shooting in the Traditional category and missed only 2 targets. Back then, that was a significant accomplishment.
Jack Rabbit Bob was a Smokey Mountain Shootist (what we then called a Knoxville Cowboy back then), was knowledgeable about guns, and usually had a big smile when amongst us. In the photo above, he’s showing Horseshoe John a Lightning Rifle. Notice the smile on his face. He moved to FL to work with a gun company to improve and introduce Lightning rifles to Cowboy shooters.
Goodbye Jack Rabbit Bob. We’re glad to have known you and to have shot with you.
Are You Ready For The Leadmine Valley Shoot-Out! … Sept. 24, 2016
Hey, pardner. Are you ready for the September 2016 Leadmine Valley Shoot-Out? Hopefully, you said, “Yes, I sure am.” …. Then the next question is, “Have you filled out a registration form and sent it to Purly?” … If you didn’t answer yes to that question, then you better get moving and get your name in the hat to shoot and for grub following the shoot.
Now if you were in the military, you’d have said you’d be ready for “chow”. And if you were some civilian who’s not a cowboy or Western movie fan, then you’d be ready for “lunch”. But we’re Cowboy & Cowgirl Shooters, and we’re also interested in Western movies, and in Westerns they always have “grub”. So, we’re having “grub” after the Leadmine Valley Shoot-Out! …. Right, Purly?
Purly, once again, is the Match Director of the September Leadmine Valley Shoot-Out! Like last year and the year before, we’ll have 5, fast paced stages to shoot … and a Best Dressed Lady and Best Dressed Gent contest … and shooting awards presented after the “grub” on shoot day. …. AND …. This year Purly has Ocoee Ranger belt buckles to award to shooting category winners. The buckles look pretty nifty. Too Tall will have to give Purly an Atta Boy. … Right, Too Tall?
Remember, if you have a Buckaroo Shooter in your family, Buckaroos shoot and eat free. All other shooters pay a $25 Shoot Fee, which includes “grub” following the shoot. Non-shooters who have “grub” with us will pay $8 in advance, or at the registration table the morning of the shoot. But, please help us and pay in advance. It will really simplify the process.
Here’s a list of awards that will be presented in 2016:
Best Dressed Lady
Best Dressed Gent
Top Gun
Top Lady Shooter
Top 10 Shooters

Match With No Misses
Buffalo Shoot – .22 Cal.
