Ocoee Rangers Newsletter Vol. 14 No. 1-B January 30, 2016

2016 started sorta different, didn’t it? The December 2015 shoot was held on January 2nd, 2016. Then, the January 23rd shoot was held on January 30th, because snowy weather impacted traffic in the region. When the Jan. 23 match was canceled and rescheduled for Jan 30, that left Too Tall with a tough decision: should he cancel the Buffalo Shoot on Jan 23 and reschedule it to be held on the same day as the main match – Jan. 30th? Finally, he conferred with Jackson Longstreet and decided to move the Buffalo shoot to Jan. 30. Who said Too Tall couldn’t make rational decisions?
But Buffalo Shooters are true sportsmen. At the Jan. 30th Shoot, Pleasant loaned Sundance McNeyman his rifle to use in the Long Range Rifle – Rifle Caliber Competition. And Sundance bested Pleasant and won the event. How ’bout that? Too Tall won all the other stuff.
60 shooters participated in the main match, 28 of which (46%) shot with no misses. When the last shot was fired, Hurricane Charly was the TOP Gun, Last Kiss was the Top Lady Shooter, and Clancy O’Conall was the Top Maverick Shooter. This was our 1st shoot trying the Maverick experiment. Clancy and 4 other Maverick shooters shot pistol targets at 10 yards vs 4 yards and rifle targets beyond the standard 10 yard rifle targets. 5 shooters shot in the Maverick event. Clancy paid 2 entry fees and shot as a Classic Shooter at the closer targets, and also as a Maverick. Clancy shot with no misses at the regular shoot targets but missed 5 as a Maverick. He said that he had fun as a Maverick. Of course he usually has fun, however he shoots.
The Top 10 Shooters were (1) Hurricane Charly (2) Ocoee Red (3) Purly (4) Marshal W.D. (5) Barkeep Casey (6) Koda Joe (7) Pa Faux (8) Tabasco J.O.T. (9) Pleasant and (10) Happy Pappy.
Tabasco J.O.T. had a really big day. He placed 8th Overall, and he was accompanied by 2 capable and determined pardners, grandsons S.A. Jr. and Sam Whitmore. It’s sorta interesting that Sam’s real name is Ben Thompson. In the real Old West, there was a gunfighter named … Ben Thompson. Of course that Ben Thompson, unlike Tabasco’s Ben Thompson, was hard to get along with. He was killed with King Fisher, another gunslick, in an ambush at a theater.
Maverick Shooting Began At The Jan 30th Shoot
Imagine you’re in the real Old West and you had to battle rustlers, or raiding Indians, or you were in town and a gang robbed the bank. There was no insurance back then, and if the money rode out with the bandits, it was your money. So, citizens like you shot at the bandits, just like the citizens in Northfield, Minnesota shot up the James – Younger gang. But in those shoot-outs, pistol targets were farther than 9 to 12 feet, and rifle targets were farther than 10 yards. So ………… enter the world of Maverick Shooting. No, it’s not shooting small targets at long distances. It is different, for those who’d like to shoot a bit more like Cowboy Action Shooting used to be. You won’t be the TOP Gun, but you might be the Top Maverick Shooter. Clancy O’Conall was the Top Maverick Shooter at the Jan. 30th shoot. You won’t shoot 15 second stages as a Maverick shooter, but if you enjoy shooting, you might like it. If you’re normally a winner now, you’ll probably be a Maverick winner, you just won’t shoot as fast. ……. If you don’t want to shoot Maverick style, the big, extra close targets will still be there for you. …. Everybody can shoot the way she or he wants to, and everybody can enjoy her or his guns in the manner that pleases the individual.
Maverick Targets
Maverick Pistol Targets …. Big targets 10 yards (30 feet) from the shooting line … unless the Texas Star, knockdown, or similar targets are set for regular shooters
Maverick Rifle Targets …. Big targets 18 or 20 yards (54 feet or 60 feet) from the shooting line, if there’s that much space on the range ….. unless the Texas Star, knockdown, Flying Circle, or similar targets are set for regular shooters
Shotgun Targets … Everyone shoots the same shotgun targets.
