The Ocoee Rangers Newsletter – Dec. 2013 … Vol. 11 Issue No. 12
Posted by Deadman in NewsletterCHRISTMAS WITH THE OCOEE RANGERS
Were you good in 2013, or were you naughty, like Too Tall? If you were good, and made Santa’s A list, then you probably did ok. Your shootin’ irons will shoot and your targets will clang in 2014. But if you didn’t make the A list and got coal dust instead of your favorite gun powder, you may be disappointed on shoot days, unless you have magnum primers, like a few folks who shoot butterfly loads. Powder is something they use little or none of. This year, we celebrated Christmas with a full, 5-stage shoot, and then quickly packed up the targets and scampered over to the club house and had a catered lunch. After the meal, we presented Annual Awards and stuff. But that was after the shoot. What about the shoot?
47 shooters participated in the shoot. Hurricane Charly was the TOP GUN, and the Top Lady Shooter was Two Step Net. The Top 10 Shooters were: (1) Hurricane Charly (2) Purly (3) Black Jack Lee (4) Deadly Shooter (5) Tabasco JOT (6) Tennessee Tombstone (7) Ocoee Red (8) Jackson Longstreet (9) Polecat Carl and (10) Tin Pot. 20 shooters shot No Misses Matches.
5 shooters shot differently than anyone on the range has before. They shot “Gun Sharp. That means they shot each of the 5 stages in a different manner. They shot stage 1 Traditional (2-handed), stage 2 Duelist, stage 3 Double Duelist, stage 4 Gunfighter, and stage 5 as Outlaw … like Tombstone does. Who were these adventurers? Pleasant, Fast Harley, Pop Dawson, Tarheel and Steely I. Justice.

After Shoot Event – 2013 Awards Presentations
Fast Harley made a special presentation, as the 1st order of business at the Annual Awards presentation. On behalf of the Ocoee Rangers Cowboy & Cowgirl Shooters, he presented Ocoee Red with a Lifetime SASS Membership, and Last Kiss pinned on his Gold Badge. Ocoee Red has served as Captain of the Ocoee Rangers since we became an organization. Appointed by the Cleveland Hunting Rifle and Pistol Club (our sponsor) as Chairman of the Cowboy Shooting committee, Ocoee Red has led and represented us well through all of our 11 years. So, a hat was passed and folks tossed in contributions to show appreciation for all he’s done for us over the years. Red later made this comment: “You shouldn’t have done it, but I’m glad you did.” We’re also glad we did it, pardner.
Then Ocoee Red began the presentations of Annual Awards. The 2013 Spirit of the Game Selection Committee, very appropriately, chose Fast Harley to receive this year’s Spirit of the Game Award. Harley has been an Ocoee Ranger for many years and takes an active part in Cowboy Action shooting on our range, at Oak Ridge and at other shoots. He’s 1 of our regular Posse Leaders. If you think about it, here’s how you’d probably describe Fast Harley on the range: he quietly moves around talking with people, he’s friendly, he has a good sense of humor, he always looks good in cowboy character, he’s considerate of others, and he demonstrates what it means to be a cowboy gentleman. He’s a good diplomat for the Ocoee Rangers and for Cowboy Shooting in general. The selection group made a good choice.
Then shooting Awards were presented to the cowgirls and cowboys who shot a bit better than the rest of us during 2013. Unpleasant was presented the 2013 TOP GUN Award. Lulu McGoo received the 2013 Top Lady Shooter Award. Hurricane Charly and Unpleasant were neck & neck until the November shoot. Lulu McGoo had a lock on her award months ago.
The 2013 Top 10 winners / Shooters received certificates attesting to their skills: (2) Hurricane Charly (3) Marshal Too Tall (4) Purly & Ocoee Red (tied) (6) Clancy O’Connal (7) Tabasco JOT (8) Barkeep Casey (9) Slater and (10) Marshal W.D.
Accuracy Awards were presented to the 5 Most Accurate Shooters of 2013: (1) Hide Cutter & Sheriff Lord (tied) (3) Tennessee Hawk (4) Clancy O’Connal and (5) Rev. Adam Jones, the pistol-packin’ preacher.
It’s always fun to poke a few jabs at Marshal Too Tall, but he’s a good sport. He’s also a good shot. He was the big winner of the 2013 Buffalo Shoot. He placed 1st in .22 Cal., Long Range Lever Action Rifle and Long Range Pistol competitions. Everyone who shot in the Long Range Single Shot Rifle competition won at some time or another, and all had the same official score. So, no award was presented for that event.

2013 In Review
In 2013, participation in Ocoee Rangers Shooting was down a bit from 2012. 142 shooters shot 1 or more matches with us, compared to 155 shooters in 2012. We lost a few shooters in 2013. Sheriff Donald passed away, and Deadeye Daisy hung up her guns. Sheriff Lord and Sassy Motchie moved away, but Kid Ziggy and Amorous Ali moved back.
In 2013, 69 shooters shot 5 or more matches with us, compared to 89 who did that in 2012. But all in all, our attendance in 2013 is the highest of any Cowboy Shooting group in the region. Our sport or activity is becoming more and more a pastime of maturity, as more and more of us shoot in senior categories. Marshal WD, Unpleasant & Slater are our future.
