2009 Ocoee Ranger Shooting Categories

Time and tide waits for no one, or so some folks say. That’s sometimes called Evolution, meaning despite wishes to the contrary that things remain the same, they change. Shucks, the old west folks, at least some of them, wanted the days of the open range to last, but they didn’t. Farmers came, then barbed wire, and women and law, and before folks knew it, the Wild West had passed into history. Of course we dig it up once a month and challenge the steel cowboys out on the Cleveland and Oak Ridge ranges. SASS has also evolved over the years as it’s grown from a few cowboys shooting in California to an international organization with more than 80,000 cowboys and cowgirls playing the Cowboy Shooting game. Anticipating changes in SASS shooting categories, the Ocoee Rangers, beginning with the January match, made some of these changes ourselves: we won’t make all of them because of our size and the categories that most shooters shoot in. Also, in 2009, shooters have to shoot better than at least 1 other person to win a certificate. If at least 2 shooters register for a SASS and Ocoee Ranger recognized category, we’ll award 1 certificate. If 4 register, we’ll award 3 certificates. That’s the way we did it before 2008: we’re going back a little as we move forward. (If lots of people shoot in a category, we might even recognize more than 3 places.)

Here are the shooting categories that the Ocoee Rangers will recognize in 2009. Look in your SASS Handbook to see what’s required for each, as relates to the guns used, how to shoot the pistols, age of participant, and costuming requirements. (I know that I could put it all here. But each time I do, I make at least 1 mistake that has to be corrected. So, look it up yourself and get it correct, without my goof. I have put ages, but the Handbook may show them to be wrong.

This will probably be confusing for a while, but we’ll all manage. If Deadman goofs and has you in the wrong category for scoring, please call it to his attention, and he’ll correct it for certificates. Of course once the newsletter is printed, the newsletter won’t be reprinted. It costs too many pesos to do that. His contact information is available.

No More Modern Class

The most noticeable change will be the disappearance of the Modern class. It was originally thought that folks shooting non-adjustable sights couldn’t fairly compete with shooters using adjustable sights. That was back when the targets were smaller and farther away from the shooter. As shooter skills improved using traditional single action revolvers, and as targets grew in size and crept closer and closer to the shooter, the advantage of adjustable sights disappeared. So, the folks who shot in the Modern class can still shoot their revolvers with adjustable sights: they’ll just have to shoot in another category, such as a Traditional class.
