COLORFUL LEAVES & COWGIRLS & COWBOYS HIGHLIGHT OCTOBER SHOOT October was a terrific shoot. The weather was great, the leaves were colorful, and so were the shooters. How so? Well, Linc and Cool Waters, Horseshoe John and T-Bone showed up decked out in colorful shirts. Owlhoot Hardin, not to be up staged, went back to his vehicle and came back wrapped in a colorful blanket that would have put a Navajo Indian to shame – almost. Then Dandy Diamond showed her contribution to fall’s colors: her new shootin’ irons with purple grips. Well, they looked purple to the camera feller. They worked just fine. She placed 1st in the Cowgirl category. T-Bone added a bit of color to the props: he constructed 2 range cowboys to spiff up the range, and they looked real good.
How was the shootin’? Shucks, shootin’s always great, it’s just sometimes greater than other times. 62 shooters played the game, among which were 7 cowgirls. Carolina Gem chose not to shoot as a cowgirl this time: she shot Gunfighter to challenge Pleasant and the boys. She came in 3rd as a Gunfighter. Pleasant was 1st. Ocoee Red and Marshall Too Tall have been tradin’ digs lately in the shoots they attend, trading 1st place positions in the 49er category. This time, Ocoee Red came out 1st in the category. Linc, in addition to sportin’ new duds, won the Senior category. Lightning McCoy and Deadfoot shot it out for 1st place in the Classic category, and Lightning won. Awful Close won the

Modern Category, and Horseshoe John was 1st among the Duelists. Amongst all the smoke, it was hard to tell if there was a winner in the Black Powder group. Dead Beat was ready to claim the honors for besting the field, but T-Bone captured that honor. Was there any other shootin’ of consequence? … Oh yeah. Cruel Hand Luke was TOP GUN and winner of the Traditional group. The shootin’ results are on page 3, if you read that far.

The Reel West – Sharon Stone
Sharon Stone began her movie career at age 22, when she played a girl on a train. She did assorted small parts in movies, on TV, modeled, and then she got her biggest role to that time. She played Arnold Schwarzenegger’s wife in TOTAL RECALL, a futuristic action movie. In 1992, she took off her clothes on the screen and became a superstar in BASIC INSTINCT. But who cares about all this stuff! The important thing is that she became big enough to make movies with her clothes on and made enough money that in 1995, she pretended to be Clint Eastwood and produced and starred in her 1st Western movie, THE QUICK AND THE DEAD. In that role, she was an Eastwoodish, female gunfighter, and she looked terrific in her cowgirl duds. Like Eastwood in his UNFORGIVEN, she had Gene Hackman as the villain, and like Eastwood, she shot him at the end of the picture and then rode away. Her character’s name was Ellen.

The West of Our Imagination – Rawhide Rex
Rawhide Rex has been shooting since the ripe old age of …. Well, here’s how he described it. “I bought my 1st gun in 1999. Now, I are an expert. That’s also when I started Cowboy Shooting.” How did he choose his alias? “I got my name from the show.” Of course this word-scratcher asked, “Which show was that?” Ol’ Rex looked in disbelief and said, “Rawhide. Sponge Bob Square Pants hadn’t been released yet.” What does he shoot? “I shoot .45’s, because they don’t make .65’s.” He shoots 2 real colts, with 7 ½ inch barrels, packed in genuine Curly Bill holsters.
When asked if there was anything else that should be included, ol’ Rex said, “I’ve been married to the same ol’ woman for 30 years, and I’m only 37. We were 18 and 19. And my son is Legislative Director for the state of North Carolina.” Then, Rex posed for this picture. He’s a cowboy who’s proud of his family, his hardware, his cowboy image and his hobby. Simply stated, he’s a good cowboy. That’s why he’s
featured here. Cowgirls love good cowboys …. or so I’ve been told.
The Real West – Ellen Watson
Ellen Watson was born in Canada in 1861, but her family immigrated to Kansas. Ellen’s father was a farmer, and she grew up in a family of 10 children. She was the oldest of the kids, and 10 children eat a lot. So when she was about 16, her parents sent her off to work as a cook and housekeeper for a local banker. Ellen became a good cook and housekeeper, a skill that was to come in handy.
In 1879, 18 years old Ellen married William Pickell. After they were married, she learned what many of the locals already knew about Bill Pickell: he drank, and when he did he was mean and abusive. About 2 years later, Ellen fled the marriage, after Bill beat her with a whip. She worked in the area as a cook and domestic and later moved to Red Cloud, Nebraska, where she worked as a cook and domestic at the Royal Hotel. While there, she divorced Pickell.
In 1886, Ellen Watson married James Averell. Jim was a homesteader, an appointed Postmaster and Justice of the Peace in the Sweetwater valley, WY. Because a married couple could have only 1 homestead, they didn’t advertise the marriage, and Ellen, then

called Ella, lived about 2 miles from Jim on her 160 acre homestead which adjoined his. Their land was in the flats and straddled and controlled a creek that watered the meadow, formerly part of the public domain, that a local rancher, Albert J. Bothwell, considered his hay meadow. Averell operated a road ranch and farmed. At his road ranch, he had a general store, sold beer, and provided lodging to passing travelers. He did not deal in cattle. Ella fenced in 60 acres at her cabin, where she pastured footsore cattle that she had bought from travelers on the Oregon Trail, which passed nearby. With calves, she had about 40 head of cattle. To help her work her place, she had taken in 2 boys whose family situations were less than favorable for raising kids: 1 was 11 and the other was 14.
On the afternoon of July 20, 1889, Albert Bothwell and 5 other ranchers went to Ella’s homestead and at gunpoint put her in a buggy, went to Averell’s homestead and repeated the process, then drove them 5 miles away and hung them from a pine tree. The stranglers tied a rope around each of their necks and pushed them off a rock that was about a foot above ground level. Neither their hands nor feet were tied. There they kicked and choked until they died.
Soon, a telegram was sent to Cheyenne, where a newspaper reporter combined the lives of Ella Wilson, a 40ish year old prostitute who had been wounded in a shootout in a house of prostitution at Ft. Fetterman, and that of 28 year old Ellen Watson. Ellen Watson was 28 years old, 5 ft. 8 in. tall and weighed about 165 lbs. Ella Wilson was thin, short, age 40ish and a sure enough soiled dove. He created a mythical story about “Cattle Kate” Watson, prostitute and hard riding cattle rustler who cussed her lynchers with her last breath. Other papers picked up the tale, and an innocent young woman became a notorious prostitute and cattle thief. The legend was created, and with printing, it became widely accepted as truth. And as the editor said in THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALENCE, when the legend becomes truth, print the legend, and many people have printed and accepted the legend as fact.
Ellen’s father came to settle her affairs, although Bothwell had already reclaimed the land. During his stay, he heard all the rubbish about his daughter, believed it, returned home, threw away anything that was a reminder of Ellen, and refused to allow anyone in the family to mention her for the remainder of his life. None of his daughter’s killers were ever tried. 25 years later, the US government sued Bothwell and the person to whom he had recently sold his ranch. It seems that in amassing “his” ranch, Bothwell had illegally fenced off 30,000 acres of the public domain and sold it to the new owner.
Ellen’s 6 murders each died millionaires. She died abused in life and in death, guilty only of pursuing her dream to become a legal owner of western land. This is the tragic story of Ellen Watson, who never was “Cattle Kate”.

OCOEE RANGERS CHRISTMAS SHOOT & FAMILY EVENT – DEC 18
Don’t forget, our annual Christmas shoot & family event will be held December 18th. We’ll have a 4-stage shoot at the regular time, then go to lunch at the Golden Corral in Cleveland. So far, gracious vendors have contributed several door/trail prizes to give away in a random drawing at the luncheon event. Cowboys & Cowgirls who choose to do so can bring an unwrapped gift, not to exceed an approximate value of $10 to $15, to put in a bag for a cowboy drawing among participants who want to trade gifts. It’s a fun event, but if you don’t want to participate in this part of the whing-ding, it ain’t required and won’t be noticed.

OCOEE RANGER SHOOTERS AT ALABAMA STATE SHOOT
If Horseshoe John lived in Alabama, he’d be the Alabama CAS state champion Sr. Duelist. He placed 1st in that category during the Alabama State Cowboy Action Shooting Shoot. Cool Waters also performed well: he placed 15th overall and shot a match with no misses. All totaled, 14 Knoxville – Cleveland CAS shooters participated in the Alabama State Shoot, and 15 participated in the Tennessee State Shoot. Other shooters were Pleasant, Unpleasant, Pyro, Owlhoot Hardin, Ocoee Red, Marshal Too Tall, and others that this old feller can’t remember.
