Competition …. Ghosts, Spooks And A Flying Witch!

October is the month of Halloween and ghosts and creatures of the night. But it’s also the time of year when leaves are donning fall colors and the sky, between the clouds, is brilliant blue. Such was the Ocoee Rangers October Shoot Day. Attendance was down a bit: 55 shooters attended and participated. Lots of other regular shooters were away attending the TN – KY Black Powder State Shoot. Come to think of it, that’s probably why it was cloudy from time to time at our shoot: all that black powder smoke drifted west and sometimes obscured the sun. But smoke or clouds, Ocoee Rangers shooters shot it out with swirling targets on the Texas star, knock-downs, statics and with a flying “witch” that flew across the range. Shooters had 5 chances to hit the witch, blazing away with 1 of their six-guns.

16 Shooters Have No Misses Matches At September Shoot

Not many steel bad guys got away in September. 16 of the 71 shooters hit all their targets, earning them Perfect Match Certificates for the Shoot. That means 23% of the folks who shot had No-Misses Matches. And the match had its challenges, among which were the Texas Star, which was shot with pistols, and a real distant target, which if hit earned shooters a bonus of time removed from their scores. And Last Kiss and Fast Harley had an inter-family competition. Both shot in the Gunfighter category. He placed 16th overall and she placed 18th. Both only missed 3 shots. And their overall time was only half a second apart.

Fast Harley and Last Kiss

Fast Harley and Last Kiss

Unpleasant was the Top Gun for September, and Last Kiss was, once again, the Top Cowgirl Shooter. Marshal Too Tall came in 2nd in the main match and won the .22 Caliber, Lever Action Rifle and Long Range Single Shot Rifle competitions in the pre match Buffalo Shoot. Tin Pot won the Long Range Pistol competition.

The Top 10 Shooters were (1) Unpleasant (2) Marshal Too Tall (3) Festus D. Deputy (4) Mr. Pistol (5) Pleasant (6) Clancy O’conall (7) T-Bone Angus (8) Ocoee Red (9) El Carrera and (10) Lightning Mc Coy.

16 Shooters shot matches with no misses: Tenn Smoke, Tennessee Hoss, Owlhoot Hardin, Yazoo City Gal, Rev. Adam Jones, Vinegarroon, Tennessee Hawk, Ranger Roger, Jackson Longstreet, Lightning McCoy, El Carrera, T-Bone Angus, Clancy O’Conall, Mr. Pistol, Marshal Too Tall, and Unpleasant.

What Has 20 Eyes And Makes A Lot Of Noise?

Nope, it’s not a cicada, or jar fly as it’s called in East TN. Here’s a hint: we had 10 cowgirl shooters at the August Shoot. OK, Too Tall: that’s 10 cowgirls X 2 eyes each. Get it? The picture below shows the cowgirls of Posse No. 3, Tombstone’s posse. Of course they don’t really like him all that well. Deadman threatened to shoot’em if they didn’t stand close for the picture, but that didn’t faze’em, no better than he shoots. Last Kiss had to make the same threat before it worked. In total, we had 72 shooters out on the range shooting steel varmints.

71 Shooters Battled Steel Bad-Guys At The July Shoot

What does it take to have a good Cowboy & Cowgirl Action Shoot? It takes cowboys & cowgirls, and we had lots of ‘em at the July Shoot: 71 total shooters, 10 of which were cowgirls. Marshal Too Tall was the Top Gun of the day, and broke the record in the Buffalo Shoot .22 Cal. competition, scoring 45 of a possible 50 points. He also won the Single Shot Rifle Competition in the Buffalo Shoot. Last Kiss regained the Top Cowgirl Shooter position, while placing 17th in overall competition. Sundance McNeyman won the other Buffalo Shoot competitions: Lever Action Rifle and Long Range Pistol.

Cowboy Action Shooting is a colorful sport, and these cowboys are a good example.
