August  – the month for shooters. And we had 64 of ‘em.  We had the quick, the accurate, and the cheerful.  What separates these kinds of shooters? Well, some shoot very fast and win.  Some shoot, not so fast, but the targets take a pounding from them, and some really enjoy playing the cowboy & cowgirl shooting game. Jaybird Daniel returned from …. Well, he must have fenced himself into some place, but he returned and placed 14th after not shooting for about a year. Tinker Chapley’s brother, Passing Through, was passing through and came out and played the game with ol’ Tinker. Summer Dove and Tucson Tuco were both sporting new sombreros and both looked nifty.  Unfortunately, Shadrack Jones is back in the hospital and couldn’t come and play with us.  We wish him a speedy recovery.

Hombre Sin Nombre

Competition is part of the cowboy shooting game, and some of us are more competitive than others.  For example, in the last year or so, both Ocoee Red and Marshal Too Tall have really improved their shooting.  Ocoee Red was overheard talking about a call he received from Too Tall a week or so ago.  Both had shot with the Knoxville cowboys on their home range, and Too Tall beat Ocoee Red.  When he got home, he called Red and said that maybe he (Red) was getting old & should give up cowboy shooting and take up shuffleboard.  That’s vicious. 

On the positive side, Cool Waters  (Saddle Bag Bullets) was very generous and donated 4 boxes of his bullets as door prizes, and 3 lucky cowboys and 1 lucky cowgirl went home with some first class shootin’ fodder for their guns.  Thanks, Cool Waters.

August’s Wranglers were Sheriff Jack Cooley, Tennessee Tombstone, Last Kiss, Red Neckerson, Purly, Moonshine Robert and the Rev. Adam Jones.  The Rev shot his 2nd consecutive match without a miss. He was joined in the perfect match crowd by Cruel Hand Luke, Hombre Sin Nombre, T-Bone Angus, R.I.P. Overland, and Owlhoot Hardin. 

Tabasco JOT conducted his pre-shoot side event, which Diamondback Dennis won.  Marshal Too Tall conducted the Buffalo shoot.  Tri placed 1st in the .22 cal. class and Pleasant placed

1st in the long range class.

How’d the match shooting go?  Well, Diamondback Dennis narrowly edged out Cruel Hand Luke as Top Gun.  Festus placed in the Top 10 shooters for the 1st time, placing 8th. Of course he cheated to achieve this accomplishment.  He has changed his alias, and he shot under a new name, Festus D. Deputy. (He used to be Festus Dirt Dobber.) And Bittercreek Jack and Tennessee Jake shot in a new class for the 1st time in August: they joined the seniors.

IMAGINE …. You’re a cowboy target.  1 Friday each month, Linc comes to your bedroom, scrapes away the spider webs, chases away the wasps, and wakes you up.  Then he grabs you by the hat, takes you outside, sticks a bolt through your head, and hangs you up in the sun.  Later, Horseshoe John comes along, jiggles you a little, moves you a few inches, and then they all go away.  It gets boring, so you do what you do best; sleep. 

Next morning, a lot of noise wakes you up. You hear someone yell something about Tabasco JOT doing something to his side and striking a match?  Then, it gets quite again, and you doze off for another little nap.  Suddenly, something whams you in the chest.  You wake up and see a wildly dressed human woman in a big hat pointing something at you. Standing beside her, with a wild shirt and a big grin and a bigger hat is a little feller, not much bigger that you, saying, “Shoot the 1 on the left 1st.” Then wham something hits you again. Some old feller in a white shirt with a cross around his neck says, “This is fun.”  But you’re thinking, “Come down here and see how much fun it is”.  Well, maybe that ain’t what a target thinks. Maybe he has fun too.

The Reel West, The Real West & The West Of Our Imagination

The Reel West  – Marie Windsor

Marie Windsor was a gal of the west.  Born in Utah, she studied drama at Brigham Young University and became Miss Utah, before leaving home to go to Hollywood to “become a star”.  During her career, she was in 75 feature films, more than 100 TV appearances, and appeared on stage, on and off Broadway, in about 2-dozen stage shows.  But who cares about that.  The question is, did she make Westerns?  And the answer is:  you bet your boots she did.

Marie appeared in movies with Wild Bill Elliott (Shadrack Jones’ hero – Elliott sometimes played Shadrack Jones.), Forest Tucker, James Garner, and a host of other Reel West cowboys, including John Wayne.  Some of her film credits include Support Your Local Gunfighter, with Garner, Hellfire and Showdown, with Elliott, and Cahill: US Marshall, with John Wayne. (A cowboy doesn’t abbreviate John Wayne’s name.)  Marie also appeared a number of times on the original Maverick TV series with Garner, and appeared on many other shows as well.

Marie Windsor

In whatever roles she played, Marie usually played tough gals who could defend themselves or even prey on others. Playing good gals and western cowgirl bandits like Doll Brown and Belle Starr, she wore dresses and pants with belted six-guns.  And she looked much better than the real Belle Starr in dresses or pants, on or off a horse.

Marie joined the cowboy & cowgirl posse in the sky in 2000.  She was 78.

Hoppalong Cassidy

The West of our imagination  ….  Sunflower

Sunflower.  Has a ring to it, doesn’t it?  Well, this cowgirl thought so.  When selecting her alias, she chose something that she’d always liked.  She liked sunflowers so much that she covered her kitchen with them.  But that’s just part of her story.  She learned to shoot from her dad, as a teenager. The old gentleman must have predicted her future, because the 1st gun he taught her to shoot was a pistol.  Then later, when she and her other (not better) half,

C. Rider got hitched, he bought her a .38.  And when she started cowgirl shooting, what did she choose to shoot?  Yeah, .38’s. 

Sunflower

Turning back the pages of history, Sunflower’s mom says that when she was a little girl, she asked for a “cowboy suit” for Christmas one year.  Christmas morning arrived, and she had a …. “cowgirl suit”.  And she was really disappointed.  But shucks, she grew up to be a very nifty cowgirl.  She always liked cowboys.  That’s why she wanted the “cowboy” duds.  Who was her cowboy hero?  It was ….  Hoppalong Cassidy.  Ole Hoppy was a hero to lots of little cowboys and cowgirls.

Belle Starr

The Real west  … Belle Starr

Her name was Myra Maybelle Shirley, and although she was neither attractive to look at nor did she accomplish anything notable, she became a mythic character of the Wild West.  People who watch Western movies still sometimes hear her name. She is known by her  married name …. well, 1 of her several married names.  Myra became known as Belle Starr, Bandit Queen of the Oklahoma Territory.

During her lifetime, she was prosecuted several times as a horse thief, although convicted only once.  And she was wife to and companion of horse thieves and robbers, although there is no proof that she was ever a robber.  And she had her picture made with Blue Duck, a notorious badman, when he was in the custody of the law and pending trial.  That was their only contact, but from that photo sprang another yarn that she was ol’ Blue Duck’s mistress.

There were a lot of stories told about Myra, stories that appeared so spectacular that folks

accepted them as true, especially after the pulp fiction writers made her famous as a bandit queen.  Shucks, the most notable photo of her shows her mounted on her horse and wearing a big S&W pistol. And to top it off, she was shot down from ambush on the road when riding home on horseback.  The killer was never identified or apprehended, and that mystery further fuelled the myth. So, all the ingredients were there for a legendary tale.  And in the telling, her outlaw deeds grew to rival those of Jesse James.  She became beautiful to look at.  And her daughter became the illegitimate daughter of Cole Younger, not just 1 of Myra’s worthless husbands.

Myra, oops, make that Belle Starr, has been portrayed in Western movies by Jane Russell, Marie Windsor, Jean Tierney, and several other reel west cowgirls.  And they all had 1 thing in common:  they all were much better looking than Myra was.  But what the heck.  The nature of myth is to inspire and entertain and to celebrate our history, because after all, history is myth that we accept as fact.  And what’s wrong with making that impressive, especially in our world of make believe cowboys & cowgirls.
